Ever walked into a lobby with gleaming floors, spotless walls, and bright ceilings? It feels welcoming. Professional. Reassuring. Now think of the opposite: dirty grout lines, scuffed vinyl flooring, dingy ceiling tiles with water stains or discoloration. It’s not just unappealing—it creates discomfort. There’s something fascinating about the way we interact with the spaces around us. We associate the condition of a space with how it's cared for, how safe it is, and how much the people inside matter.

Without even realizing it, we constantly take in details about our environment. The floor beneath our feet. The tile on the wall. The ceiling above our heads. These surfaces are telling a story—whether we’re consciously paying attention or not.

Some of those stories are subtle. They influence our comfort, our focus, our productivity, and even our sense of safety and cleanliness. A clean, well-maintained hallway might go unnoticed, but it makes us feel at ease. A worn restroom or dingy waiting area, on the other hand, sends a different message—maybe even one that makes us uncomfortable or hesitant, without us understanding why.

It’s visual, yes. But it’s also psychological and emotional. The condition of a space influences how welcome we feel, how productive we are, how safe we perceive a place to be. In the world of property and facility management, these things matter more than we often realize. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to walk hundreds of facilities with clients. Often, we’re there for a specific reason—maybe to discuss restoring tile and grout with our exclusive SaniGLAZE system. But as we move through the space, something almost always happens; we start noticing more.

Sterling Services has some exciting news! We would like to welcome Chuck McEnroe as our Regional Manager in San Antonio, TX. Chuck will emphasize our commitment to customer service and dedication to our customer experience.

Chuck used to work as a program manager and a coatings inspector. He is NAVSEA Basic Paint Inspector certified, which is a certification for people who inspect coated areas on Navy ships. There is a five-day course which is designed for people and organizations involved in painting work on Navy ships, but anyone can take it to become a basic paint inspector. Not everyone can take the course or get this type of certification. You have to have so many proven hours in all levels of Naval coating applications in order to be qualified.

As part of the San Antonio Sterling Services team, Chuck plans to strengthen the sales in this region as well as build relationships in the “Lone Star State”. He enjoys assisting clients by identifying and addressing their current needs while developing a comprehensive plan to get them what they want.

“Hailing from Texas, my journey as a coatings specialist has taken me to numerous countries and cities around the world. I now look forward to returning to my home state, bringing with me a unique perspective and expertise in the field,” said Chuck.

Team Spotlight - Tyree Owens

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Tyree Owens, our regional manager in Phoenix, AZ to learn more about his life and how he ended up at Sterling Services.

Tyree completed his undergraduate degree at Arizona State University where he was a wrestler and then he went on to The University of Oklahoma where he earned his master's degree. Tyree is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area but spent most of this time in Arizona and Oklahoma after high school. He loves taking in the Vitamin D in the Grand Canyon State!

Although the idea was introduced through his family, Tyree didn’t necessarily think about entering the flooring service industry from a young age. He was in education before exploring the different types of sales positions and he even thought of becoming a wrestling coach or an athletic director. And even though the flooring industry hasn’t always been in his background, Tyree’s experiences in education had set him up for success.

Tyree wanted a change and after speaking with our CEO Dan Davis, he believed in the support and growth that can happen with Sterling Services. Tyree has some experience working at SaniGLAZE, but once he met with the Sterling team in Arizona, he knew it would be a great spot for him.

Between his time in education and logistics, Tyree’s previous job experience helped force him to develop soft skills to connect with different audiences, identify needs, and connect them with the appropriate solution. He was always taught to have a solution-driven approach to help customers reach their goals while building trust.

When Tyree started at Sterling Services in Arizona, he was working as a technician with Mike. “Fortunately for me, we were able to click immediately and he trusted me to do some of the work. I learned a lot that day and was able to build trust and respect between me and Mike,” said Tyree.

Team Spotlight - Edgar Gonzalez

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Edgar Gonzalez, our Operations Manager in Darien, IL to learn more about his life and how he ended up at Sterling Services.

Edgar has been the Operations Manager at Sterling Services for 26 years. He started as a technician in Illinois and worked his way up to become the Operations Manager. He grew up in the west suburbs of Illinois and entered the workforce right after high school. He initially wanted to go into IT but ended up learning that it wasn’t the career for him.

One of the reasons Edgar wanted to work at Sterling Services and work in the flooring industry is because of the customer service skills he knew he would learn. With Sterling Services being a family-owned and operated business, we are only as good as the people who serve our customers. Edgar helps promote the mission of Sterling Services that the success of the company comes as a direct result of the relationships built with the customers.

“I have enjoyed working at Sterling Services primarily due to the great work environment and being able to connect with my coworkers and team members,” Edgar said.

One of Edgar’s first-day memories is that Dan Davis, CEO of Sterling Services, brought in lunch and how Edgar was part of the initial start of the company along with four others. Since 1997, the company has continued to thrive and expand beyond the Midwest to offer its services in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Edgar is into cars and appreciates nice things. He plans to retire in a coastal city in the south to enjoy his time and relax!

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Yajaira Gonzalez, our Office Manager in Darien, IL to learn more about her life and how she ended up at Sterling Services.

Yajaira graduated from SIU Carbondale with a degree in psychology. She grew up in Cicero and has been at the same home that has been in her family for over 20 years. Yajaira started working with Solutions, Dan Davis’s dad's company, as a carpet tech as a part-time job in high school. She went up the ranks and became a supervisor and continues to work with Sterling during college breaks and vacations as a supervisor.

Previously, Yajaira worked as a mental health counselor for over nine years after college. She spent the last few years specifically working with children and adolescents. After working in the mental healthcare field, she felt the need to move on to the next chapter of her career and became the Office Manager at Sterling Services.

From being a carpet tech to then becoming a supervisor to now being the office manager, Yajaira brings a lot of knowledge to Sterling Services and her role. She offers guidance and advice from her experience working in the field and now in the office with her coworkers and clients.

Having worked in the mental health field has also helped Yajaira learn and apply effective methods of communication. She listens and understands her coworkers and clients which helps build relationships and enhance the customer service experience for prospecting clients and current clients.

“My first day returning to Sterling Services felt like coming home and being welcomed back to the family after some time away,” Yajaira said.

Yajaira loves to travel, find and try new restaurants, and attend music festivals. She loves listening to music and dancing. She is also a proud dog mom to Osito!

Team Spotlight - Luis Moran

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Luis Moran, our Regional Manager in Houston, Texas to learn more about his life and how he ended up at Sterling Services.

Luis was born and raised in southern California and moved to Houston to finish school. He graduated from Houston Community College and entered Retail Management, taking him into the retail and sales space. Luis then worked for William Sonoma for three years, learning a lot about customer service and building relationships with customers.

Then, Luis was recruited by an epoxy residence manufacturing company where he worked for six years and then struck out on his own to install epoxy floors on his own. There he expanded into commercial grocery stores, warehouses, and airports. Since he was interested in flooring and furthering his learning in the industry, Luis took a coating class to get a certification to become a coating inspector. A coating inspector helps the business to check the quality of materials and equipment, observes surface preparation, records atmospheric conditions before application of materials, and conducts adhesion, penetration, and impact tests. Luis was able to learn more about steel planks, metal coatings, and marine coatings and to help the business do the inspecting and selling. Luis was able to be the coating inspector for kitchen floors, aircraft hangars, recreational parks, and residential garage floors.

After almost 13 years, Luis was ready to stay in the Houston area and work locally. He had worked on some jobs with SaniGLAZE and then joined the previous franchise team shortly after. Since it was the industry he wanted to be in and it was local to his family, it worked out well.

When Sterling Services acquired the franchise in 2022, Luis knew that Dan wanted a chance to make a change for the better. “When Dan came in, we were able to turn the business around together. It is important to be happy with where you are and with Sterling Services, I always got the support that I needed,” Luis said.

Luis has always been in sales and estimating management and brings his extensive knowledge to the Sterling Services team. He likes to meet new people and be able to turn old floors into beautiful floors. With Sterling Services, Luis sees the big picture and sees how the company is growing and continues to grow.

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Dan Davis, our President and CEO to learn more about his life and how he started Sterling Services.

Owned and operated by Dan Davis and his family since 1997, Sterling Services started as a carpet cleaning company. In 2002, the company expanded to floors and tile restoration to start offering services such as SaniGLAZE. Since then, Sterling Services has expanded its services to Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Within one month of acquiring the franchise, Sterling Services became one of the largest SaniGLAZE providers in the United States. Dan knew the industry well from previous jobs earlier in his career. He brought that knowledge to life when he collaborated with SaniGLAZE and promoted solutions to the recurring problem of bathrooms and floors needing to be fixed.

“I needed a change in my life, I always knew that I wanted to work for myself. I knew this was the kind of work that I wanted to get into since I like helping people and solving the problem. No one else ever had an answer to it before, and now every time we complete a job, we always deliver,” said Dan.

With Dan being in the business for over 27 years, he has met a network of the smartest people in the facility maintenance industry across the United States. With that knowledge of a network, Sterling Services is able to come up with the most creative and unique solutions to provide our customers with cost-effective, eco-friendly solutions to their flooring and surface needs, using innovative and aesthetically pleasing products including SaniGLAZE, Fast Flow, and SoyStone, to achieve superior results.

Team Spotlight - Darrell Gibbs

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Darrell Gibbs, our regional manager in Dallas, Texas to learn more about his life and how he ended up at Sterling Services.

Darrell was born and raised in Odessa TX, which is a small city about five hours west of Dallas. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Exercise & Sports Sciences. Originally, Darrell wanted to get into coaching or the allied healthcare field. However, when he graduated he moved back home which is a predominantly oil-field country, and began working as a field engineer for an oil company. Darrell did have a short stay in San Francisco for a couple of years where he worked as a project manager before his wife and he decided to permanently settle in Dallas.

Darrell didn’t know at first that he wanted to work with tile, but when he first heard of SaniGLAZE/Sterling Services, he found the products and concepts exciting and it grabbed his attention. From there he wanted to keep learning more about the company. Darrell’s previous jobs helped him with many of his current job processes with Sterling Services like time management and scheduling. And, it helps that President and CEO Dan Davis has always been available for any questions arising from the job. Darrell was with SaniGLAZE for seven years before Sterling Services took over the Dallas office. From day one communication was key and still holds over a year later.

Some fun facts about Darrell are that he likes to think that he is a jack of all trades and is always soaking up new ideas and concepts. He and his wife Justine have been married for nine years and have two daughters (Olivia – 5 and Amina – 2) whom they pour everything into. Darrell is always volunteering with the school as well as coaching his daughter's soccer team.

Team Spotlight - Robert Gonzalez

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Robert Gonzalez, our Regional Manager in Minnesota, to learn more about his life and how he ended up at S2 and Sterling Services.

Robert went to school in Chicago at the International Academy of Design and Technology, where he received a bachelor's degree in graphic design. Robert grew up in Cicero, Illinois, and now resides in Inver Grove, Heights, Minnesota with his wife and two kids.

Robert has worked with Dan and the team for 20+ years and started off as a carpet, cleaning technician, and transitioned to a SaniGLAZE technician. He has also worked for a flooring distributor in Chicago called EJ Welch, and there he had more familiarity with the processes of installing tile, self-leveling, and concrete patch products.

Robert’s previous job helped him know how to prep a floor, treat tile, and know exactly what is getting put into restroom floors that are not treated with SaniGLAZE. Robert’s previous job has helped him at Sterling Services because he is able to explain the type of materials that are going into newly constructed jobs. Robert can explain to clients the types of products that are on their floors since he has a keen eye for luxury vinyl tile, luxury vinyl plank, wood floors, and cement floors.

Being a family man, Robert loves to spend time with his wife and kids. His fun fact is that he was a graphic designer and has been working at Sterling Services since he was 15.

Jason is originally from Cicero, IL, and then grew up in the Central IL region for the remainder of his childhood. He returned to the city area to attend and earn his degree in Culinary Arts at Kendall College in Evanston, IL, and now resides in Chicago.

Jason spent the early part of his career in restaurants, catering, and events management. For the bulk of his career, he was leading large-scale food service operational and safety management with Sodexo in the divisions of Colleges & Universities and Corporate Business. While with Sodexo, Jason transitioned from Food Service Management into Facilities and EHS Management which is where he first learned about Sterling Services as a customer of ours.

I want you to take the lead on this meeting.” I was humored by the analogy of “sink or swim”, as this was a client that was looking to solve a challenge they had with old tile and grout surrounding their swimming pool. I am pleased to say that I was able to secure the client's trust and our excellent team was able to install a high-build epoxy system applied over the existing tile, saving the client significant costs and headaches by not having to gut and replace their flooring, while providing a safe and aesthetically pleasing floor. Funny enough, the same way I learned how to swim, “sink or swim”.”

Team Spotlight - Don Sternig

Get to know our team members here at Sterling Services! We spoke with Don Sternig, our regional manager in Wisconsin, to learn more about his life and how he ended up at Sterling Services.

Don grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin and went to Brookfield East HS where he started dating his now wife. They have stayed in the area since then and have raised three kids who also went to the same high school!

When he first began his career, Don went into the trades as a Tile Setter and worked for a family friend. What had started as a first job turned into a job that lasted over 20 years. Not going into an office and learning a trade while earning a good salary had its perks! Don was able to experience installing new types of flooring and wall tile while working indoors and outdoors when needed. New home construction was his specialty, and being able to see a project from beginning to end was exciting. The transformation from the beginning of a high-end home to the end of the project was one of his favorite parts.

After he tore his ACL and couldn’t kneel at work every day, Don started working for Sterling Services. Don’s transition from installing tile and grout to selling SaniGLAZE restoration was easy. Because he had the experience before, he was able to understand the porosity of grout and all the different types and shapes of tiles, whether they are quarry, granite, porcelain, or ceramic, which was a big help when he first started. However, going from a 40+ hour a week job site every day to sales was a big difference for Don. But, it made it easier with the help he received with learning to work with contacts and at trade shows. He spent the first few weeks working alongside the technicians, learning how to install the flooring, and understanding how important their job is, which helped him learn more about the job that he needed to do.

Since Sterling Services has now expanded into Epoxy flooring, Terrazzo restoration, and Concrete polishing, it has given Don and the team more flexibility to help customers fix whatever the “pain point” is. With sales, Don has perfected building a relationship and building trust with customers and stopped trying to act like a “salesperson”. His expertise lies in discovering customers' “pain points” and then offering them solid solutions with the products Sterling Services offer so that the customer can make a decision easier.

Don likes to think of himself as old school; he still writes everything down. Not just work-related items but he loves to journal too. He hasn’t missed a day of journaling in over 35 years, “it’s fun to be able to look back over my life with family vacations and special events, but also remember the early days of working for Sterling Services and all of the experiences that I had back then and still have to this day.”
